Wow, seriously? $17 for a sandwich and a cup of coffee? The US$ is truly in the toilettes/WC/loo. That’s certainly the first thing I noticed after landing in Brussels yesterday for Ariba LIVE 2008 Europe.
I know, pointing out the dollar is weak isn’t exactly breaking news. But it’s a key fact of life right now that is sure to shape a lot of the debate, discussions and predictions here this week - especially in light of last week’s record crude price (which we know has a direct correlation to the declining dollar), stock market tumble and G8 meeting.
Just like last month at the North American Ariba LIVE in Las Vegas, I’ll be providing highlights and analysis of the mainstage presentations, roundtables and breakout sessions. Some very interesting speakers on the schedule, including the keynote by Telefonica’s global head of procurement process, Juan Carlos Montejano Dominguez.
Considering he and his team steer spend management strategy for a €56 billion company that operates on 5 continents, Juan Carlos should have some great insights on succeeding in challenging market conditions. I’m particularly interested in hearing how Telefonica balances compliance and adoption with flexibility in their processes.
Stay tuned. And if there are questions you’d like me to pose, breakout sessions you’d suggest I attend OR Belgian beers you’d recommend, please let me know.
