Sustainability How-To Guide in the Making

Hat tip to my boss for turning me onto eWeek’s new virtual Guide to Green Information Technology. While not earth shattering in its insights, the magazine’s short online guide offers some practical, easy-to-implement tips for reducing costs (and your carbon footprint) through power conservation and more efficient facilities and IT management.

Tips range from the obvious (”Push building management to replace all incandescent bulbs with CFLs, LED lighting or just more efficient bulbs.”) to the more innovative. My favorite innovative tips from the guide include:

  • “Use variable speed drives on motors where possible,” such as using motion sensors on stairwells or escalators and flow controls on water sources.
  • Use virtualization to cut the number of servers required to run your IT infrastructure.
  • Enforce power setting standards across all desktops, laptops, and printers.

eWeek encourages readers to contribute their own tips for “green IT” by e-mailing them to eric.lundquist@ziffdavisenterprises.com

For sustainable supply strategies that reach beyond the IT organization, attend Empower 2007. Keynote presenters include executives from leaders in corporate responsibility and sustainability, including Salesforce.com, Microsoft, and Kellogg’s. To register or for more information on these or the nearly 50 other supply management executives presenting at Empower 2007, click here.
